Reduce Moldy Hay with Anchor

“The hay is still as green as the day we put it up. We don’t have any hot spots or moldy spots in any of the hay that we baled with Anchor.”

— Todd Mangin // South Dakota

“We baled our alfalfa at 28% moisture. The bales treated with Anchor were green and smelled good. The untreated bales were still hot and stunk. The treated bales grind so much easier and the cows clean it all up.”

— Dan Lemler // South Dakota

RESEARCH SUCCESS

In a long-term hay trial in Southwest Minnesota, hay was stored for 16 months and compared to non-treated hay. Anchor hay had a relative feed value (RFV) that was 30 points higher and stayed much cooler resulting in less heat damage. Treated Anchor hay: 119 RFV. Control hay: 89 RFV.

Anchor Keeps Bales Cooler Longer

Anchor for Hay stayed much cooler, resulting in 3.67% less heat damaged protein.

Anchor Increases Hay Relative Feed Quality

Anchor for Hay maintained a RFV 30 points higher than the control.

In another study, hay was baled around 20% moisture, stacked and left to sit for 120 days. The control bales had visible mold – 278x higher than treated bales. Control bales also had spoilage. The quality was also 62 points higher in the bales treated with Anchor.

Anchor for Hay for Corn Stalks

The fall is a busy time and the cold damp weather can make it hard to get corn stalks dried out. Anchor lets you bale corn stalks at a higher moisture without spoilage for bales that aren’t mushy and loaded with mold.

“Typically, our corn stalk bales are just for winter bedding and don’t look good enough to feed. These bales looked good enough even after carrying them over from last fall. We treated them with Anchor for Hay at 30% moisture without much faith that it would work. Due to this year’s drought, the pasture grass ran out in August so we started supplementing with corn stalks. We put them into a TMR mixer with some DDGS and fed them in the pasture so our cows would have something to eat. I was shocked when 80% of the corn stalks were cleaned up! The cows are looking great, and we can keep our limited hay supply for the winter months.”

Anchor for Hay for Baleage

When higher moisture hay is line wrapped, two things tend to occur:

  • The heat generated by respiration “hay sweat” can’t escape through the plastic, so it tends to concentrate toward the center of the bale causing a brown core. Anchor can stop the heating to reduce/eliminate that brown core in baleage.

  • The sun warming up the plastic also causes condensation that leads to spoilage where the hay and plastic touch, also known as the ‘slime layer’. While Anchor can’t eliminate condensation, it can reduce depth of the slime layer. Producers using Anchor report shrinking the slime layer from 4-6” down to 2”.
